3 Fractions, decimals, percents
3.1 Proportion and percent
Another interpretation of fractions is as a proportion.
Example 3.1 (Practice: converting fractions to decimals and percents)
\(\dfrac{1}{4} =\)
\(\dfrac{3}{5} =\)
\(\dfrac{7}{8} =\)
\(\dfrac{2}{3} =\)
\(\dfrac{5}{6} =\)
\(\dfrac{3}{10} =\)
\(\dfrac{5}{4} =\)
\(\dfrac{7}{5} =\)
\(\dfrac{1}{4} = 0.25 = 25\%\)
\(\dfrac{3}{5} = 0.6 = 60\%\)
\(\dfrac{7}{8} = 0.875 = 87.5\%\)
\(\dfrac{2}{3} = 0.\overline{6} = 66.\overline{6}\%\)
\(\dfrac{5}{6} = 0.8\overline{3} = 83.\overline{3}\%\)
\(\dfrac{3}{10} = 0.3 = 30\%\)
\(\dfrac{5}{4} = 1.25 = 125\%\)
\(\dfrac{7}{5} = 1.4 = 140\%\)
Example 3.2 (Practice: converting percents to fractions)
\(25\% =\)
\(40\% =\)
\(75\% =\)
\(60\% =\)
\(3.5\% =\)
\(8.25\% =\)
\(25\% = \dfrac{25}{100} = \dfrac{1}{4}\)
\(40\% = \dfrac{40}{100} = \dfrac{2}{5}\)
\(75\% = \dfrac{75}{100} = \dfrac{3}{4}\)
\(60\% = \dfrac{60}{100} = \dfrac{3}{5}\)
\(3.5\% = \dfrac{3.5}{100}= \dfrac{35}{1000} = \dfrac{7}{200}\)
\(8.25\% = \dfrac{8.25}{100} =\dfrac{825}{10000} = \dfrac{1}{125}\)
Example 3.3 (Practice: converting decimals to percents and fractions)
\(0.4 =\)
\(0.7 =\)
\(0.125 =\)
\(0.625 =\)
\(1.09 =\)
\(0.375 =\)
\(0.4 = 40\% = \dfrac{4}{10}\)
\(0.7 = 70\% = \dfrac{7}{10}\)
\(0.125 = 12.5\% = \dfrac{125}{1000}\)
\(0.625 = 62.5\% = \dfrac{625}{1000}\)
\(1.09 = 109\% = \dfrac{109}{100}\)
\(0.375 = 37.5\% = \dfrac{375}{1000}\)
3.2 Computing percents from amounts
The UNM-Taos Institutional Research Office gathers and computes various data about students attending UNM-Taos. The following problems use data from the Spring 2026 Census Snapshot.
Example 3.4 (Practice: computing percents from amounts)
There were 50 transfer students. What percent is this?
There were 57 first-year students. What percent is this?
There were 933 who consider UNM-Taos as their “home campus” (as opposed to dual-enrollment students or students from other UNM campuses who are taking classes here). What percent is this?
\(\dfrac{50}{1321} \approx 0.0378 = 3.78\%\)
\(\dfrac{57}{1321} \approx 0.0432 = 4.32\%\)
\(\dfrac{933}{1321} \approx 0.7063 = 70.63\%\)
3.3 Computing amounts from percents
Example 3.5 (Practice: computing amounts from percents)
57% of the students were degree-seeking students. How many students is this?
42% of the students were full-time students. How many students is this?
27% of the students taking classes at UNM-Taos were students from the Albuquerque campus. How many students is this?
\(0.57 \cdot 1321 \approx 753.0\) students
\(0.42 \cdot 1321 \approx 554.8 \approx 555\) students
\(0.27 \cdot 1321 \approx 356.7 \approx 357\) students
3.4 Homework exercises

\(\dfrac{1}{3}\)
\(\dfrac{2}{5}\)
\(\dfrac{9}{4}\)
\(\dfrac{11}{5}\)
\(\dfrac{8}{3}\)
\(\dfrac{1}{2} = 0.5 = 50\%\)
\(\dfrac{4}{5} = 0.8 = 80\%\)
\(\dfrac{3}{8} = 0.375 = 37.5\%\)
\(\dfrac{5}{9} = 0.\overline{5} = 55.\overline{5}\%\)
\(\dfrac{7}{10} = 0.7 = 70\%\)
\(\dfrac{1}{3} = 0.\overline{3} = 33.\overline{3}\%\)
\(\dfrac{2}{5} = 0.4 = 40\%\)
\(\dfrac{9}{4} = 2.25 = 225\%\)
\(\dfrac{11}{5} = 2.2 = 220\%\)
\(\dfrac{8}{3} = 2.\overline{6} = 266.\overline{6}\%\)
Exercise 3.2 Convert each percent to a fraction. Simplify your answer.
\(30\%\)
\(50\%\)
\(20\%\)
\(65\%\)
\(45\%\)
\(70\%\)
\(15\%\)
\(90\%\)
\(12.5\%\)
\(37.5\%\)
\(30\% = \dfrac{30}{100} = \dfrac{3}{10}\)
\(50\% = \dfrac{50}{100} = \dfrac{1}{2}\)
\(20\% = \dfrac{20}{100} = \dfrac{1}{5}\)
\(65\% = \dfrac{65}{100} = \dfrac{13}{20}\)
\(45\% = \dfrac{45}{100} = \dfrac{9}{20}\)
\(70\% = \dfrac{70}{100} = \dfrac{7}{10}\)
\(15\% = \dfrac{15}{100} = \dfrac{3}{20}\)
\(90\% = \dfrac{90}{100} = \dfrac{9}{10}\)
\(12.5\% = \dfrac{12.5}{100} = \dfrac{125}{1000} = \dfrac{1}{8}\)
\(37.5\% = \dfrac{37.5}{100} = \dfrac{375}{1000} = \dfrac{3}{8}\)
